Edwin W Koeberle was a motorcycle pioneer.
Born in Germany in 1892 he emigrated to the United States, settling in Rochester NY, where he worked as a chauffeur for a family that owned a large food market. When the photograph that we based this illustration on was taken of Edwin he would have been around 22 years old. Edwin was a pioneer of hill climb, he competed in the sports early days. In his lifetime he apparently owned 10 Indian Motorbikes.
Later in life Edwin moved to Palmyra, a small town in upstate NY where he bought a dairy farm with his 2 sons.
Joshua James, who is Edwin's great grandson, sent the original black & white photograph to me. Sadly Joshua only met his great grandfather once shortly before Edwin passed away in 1987. But following in his great grandfathers path, Joshua too rides an Indian Motorcycle albeit a modern one.
